Nancy Lanza, mother of Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza, suffered from multiple sclerosis as she cared for her disturbed son, according to her former sister-in-law.

Adam shot Nancy four times in the face as she lay in her bed in their Newtown, Connecticut, home before he drove to the Sandy Hook Elementary school and killed 26 people, including 20 young children, before turning a gun on himself.

According to The Washington Post, former sister-in-law Marsha Lanza revealed that Nancy suffered from the debilitating disease and often traveled to New York for treatment.

Marsha is married to the brother of Nancy’s ex-husband, Peter, who supported Nancy and Adam after the divorce with massive alimony payments.

It was revealed today that Peter, who is remarried to a librarian named Shelley Rae Cudiner and living in Stamford, Connecticut, hadn’t spoken with Adam in years.

Though Adam’s and Nancy’s bodies were unclaimed days after the shooting, Marsha told the Washington Post that she expects Peter to handle the arrangements:

“She was my friend,” Marsha Lanza said. “I said to my husband, ‘Who’s going to bury Nancy?’ He said, ‘Knowing my brother, he’ll take care of it, because that’s the right thing to do.’ ”
