This week has been a big one for Marcus Davis. Following his technical knockout victory over Jonathon Goulet at UFC 113, he discovered he would be fighting in Boston at UFC 118. And now, less than one week after his last fight, Davis already has an opponent, as sources close to the Ultimate Fighting Championship revealed to MMAjunkie.com that Davis and Nate Diaz have agreed verbally to a fight on the East Coast.
Diaz is currently still dealing with the Tennessee Athletic Commission regarding his involvement in the post-fight brawl at “Strikeforce: Nashville”. However, the Stockton bad boy should be available for the Boston event to make his second consecutive appearance as a UFC welterweight. Diaz made the move to the 170-pound division against Rory Markham at UFC 111, knocking Markham out in the very first round. The move came after Diaz’s struggles to string together enough wins to make a climb in the highly competitive lightweight division.
Davis, like Diaz, had some troubles of his own prior to his last fight. The 36-year old was defeated by his British nemesis Dan Hardy at UFC 99 via split-decision and followed the loss with another one after Ben Saunders decimated Davis with a second round knockout. Davis finally righted the ship with his victory over Goulet, gaining a spot on the Boston card and some job security as well.
The UFC is set to make the move to Boston on August 28 at the TD Garden with UFC 118. The card is rumored to feature a main event between lightweight champion Frank Edgar and top contender BJ Penn in a rematch from their UFC 112 fight. Also rumored for the card is a super-fight of sorts between Randy Couture and former boxing champion James Toney.
