Edgar dropping to featherweight, according to report

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar apparently has had a change of heart.

The undersized lightweight has remained adamant that a move to featherweight was out of the question at this stage in his career, and it seemed after a split-decision loss to Benson Henderson at UFC 150 earlier this month that stance was not going to change.

Now, according to a report from Ariel Helwani on FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight,” Edgar is changing his mind and making the drop down to the featherweight division.

The decision comes after back-to-back losses to the aforementioned Henderson. Edgar has only won once in his last four fights at 155 lbs., and all four of those contests were lightweight title fights.

UFC president Dana White was one of the biggest supporters for this change for Edgar, as the former champion’s move to featherweight seriously bolsters that division’s roster.

As of this moment, featherweight champion Jose Aldo is scheduled to meet Erik Koch at UFC 153 this October. Edgar will likely fight once prior to a title fight. That is, if he wins his debut as a UFC featherweight.
