Georges St. Pierre not looking past Jake Shields

UFC President Dana White announced that if Georges St. Pierre gets past Jake Shields at UFC 129, he’ll face Anderson Silva in a super-fight.

St. Pierre isn’t foolish enough to look ahead of what is in front of him, however.

“I don’t even think about it right now. I never thought about it. I always live in the present moment. My biggest problem is Jake Shields, and it would be foolish for me to look past Jake Shields,” said St. Pierre during a special press conference on Tuesday.

“He (Shields) poses the biggest threat to my title. He’s a very well rounded fighter. The UFC brought him in and I’m glad they did because he’s the number one guy for the welterweight title. As a champion, I’m a proud champion. I want to fight the best guy and I’m going to fight Jake Shields and I’m happy to do so,” stated St. Pierre.

“Jake is different than all the guys I’ve fought recently. I think I’m different than all the guys Jake has fought recently,” said the welterweight champion. “Jake has different tools. He’s dangerous in a different way, and I’m dangerous in a different way. “

“The guys that fought Jake before, they tried to keep the fight standing up. They were worried about the ground. Jake doesn’t know what I’m going to do to do to him. I can go with striking, or I can go with the takedown and ground and pound and go for submissions. I think that makes me dangerous,” added St. Pierre.

“Jake is very dangerous as well for me because he’s been working really hard on his Muay Thai, so he’s going to try to knock me out standing up, and he’s going to try to submit me on the floor,” commented the Canadian superstar. “He’s the kind of guy that doesn’t have one big weapon, but he’s very well rounded and a very clever fighter. That’s what makes him the most dangerous, that he’s a clever guy. “

St. Pierre has become known for his methodical destruction of his opponents through effective game planning, but that’s also a strong attribute of the challenger Shields.

“You have a lot of guys who are dangerous in the sport, but they aren’t clever. They go there and they try to rumble, and he’s not that kind of guy. He’s very clever, and that’s why he’s very dangerous for me,” said St. Pierre.
