What’s New In Games This Week

Sometimes the hype machine doesn’t lie; anyone whose has logged into their 360 dashboard has seen the message, and one of 2011’s most anticipated games is indeed finally here. Though a blast from the past and an out of nowhere maverick are gladly welcomed as well.

What really needs to be said here? The final chapter of the Gears of War trilogy comes to a white knuckle, high octane, bloody as hell, “gee, I had no idea the Xbox 360 could do that!” conclusion. It’s the final round of Marcus Fenix and the rest of Delta Squad vs the Locust, and pretty much every lose end of the series up till this point will be wrapped up, or so says the game’s creator Cliff Bleszinski. Furthermore, in addition to an upgraded Horde Mode called Horde 2.0, which promises a far more strategic slant, there’s also the brand new Beast Mode, which as you playing as the Locust against the COG. Oh, and Sony ain’t the only ones supporting the 3D set, as GoW3 will also have support for stereoscopic 3D. Xbox 360

For those who believe the current incarnation of mixed martial arts, the kind the UFC is putting forth is somewhat sanitized, and miss the anything goes days before Dana White bought the company – here’s the game for you. Its approach is completely no holds barred; given that pretty much every big name in the sport has been signed up. This brand new, from out of nowhere effort is not trying to impress you with glitz and glamour, because there isn’t any. Instead it’s a thoroughly underground affair, filled with no names that simply brutalize each other in dark and dingy arenas, with moves that might not fly in the Octagon these days. Like the good old days as some might say. Though the jury’s out on whether this game will satisfy those unhappy with the official UFC and EA offerings. PS3, Xbox 360

Resident Evil 4 HD

As part of Capcom’s birthday bash for the Resident Evil franchise, which celebrates 15 years this year, arguably the best installment is coming to XBLA and PSN. It’s going to be a pretty much straightforward port, which is totally fine and dandy because, again, it’s the head of its class, with the only key difference being upgraded visuals. Meaning those infected Spanish villagers will be looking scarier than ever, and the President’s daughter whom you must rescue will look even hotter. Win-win. PS3, Xbox 360
