Comedian Robert Schimmel, a Howard Stern regular and best selling author, died Friday night at an Arizona hospital. The 60 year old cancer survivor was hospitalized last Thursday for injuries he suffered in a car accident. Schimmel's daughter, Aliyah, was driving the car and swerved to avoid another vehicle, flipping her car multiple times. She is still in the hospital at this time.
Schimmel's younger brother, Jeff Schimmel, confirmed the news late Friday night via his Facebook status, posting: "ROBERT SCHIMMEL. Son, Brother, Father, Grandfather, Comedian, Generous Man. I have always loved you, admired you, and was proud to be your biggest fan. I will never forget a single moment. R.I.P."
Schimmel was best known for his stand up material which addressed the darker aspects of his personal life and sexual proclivities. In 2008, Da Capo Press released Schimmel's Cancer on $5 a Day ** (chemo not included): How Humor Got Me Through the Toughest Journey of My Life, a best seller that detailed his battle with Stage III non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
At this time, his website is still up, with upcoming tour dates unchanged. Feel free to visit and listen to some classic Schimmel routines before someone changes anything.
