Latest Jets News
Will McDonald : Puts on weight
Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters Wednesday that McDonald added 15 pounds of muscle in the offseason, Connor Hughes of SNY.tv reports. The 2023 first-round pick from Iowa State is already coming off the best season of his career, posting 28 total tackles, including 10.5 sacks, three passes defended and two forced fumbles across 17 regular-season games. With a new defensive-minded head coach in Glenn and added muscle, McDonald appears poised to take another step forward and emerge as one of the NFL's top edge rushers in 2025.
Jermaine Johnson : Sidelined Wednesday
Johnson (Achilles) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports. As expected, Johnson will begin the Jets' offseason activities on the sideline as he continues to recover from the torn Achilles he sustained two games into the 2024 season. According to Costello, Johnson is likely to remain out until training camp. Once healthy, the 2022 first-round pick is expected to return as one of the Jets' top pass rushers in 2025.
Anders Carlson : Competing for starting role
Carlson and undrafted rookie Caden Davis are slated to compete for the Jets' starting kicker job in training camp in the wake of the Jets having released veteran Greg Zuerlein (knee) Friday, Andy Vasquez of NJ.com reports. Carlson kicked for New York in five regular-season games in 2024, while also logging two appearances with the 49ers. In those seven contest combined, he converted 13 of 15 field-goal attempts and 12 of 15 extra-point tries. Zuerlein's release has been expected all offseason, but with the transaction now official, Carlson's path to a starting role Week 1 is unambiguous. The Jets could still bring in further competition, but for the time being, Davis, an undrafted rookie out of Ole Miss, is his only rival for the No. 1 gig.
Jermaine Johnson : Officially back with Gang Green
The Jets exercised Johnson's (Achilles) fifth-year option Wednesday. Despite tearing his Achilles two games into the Jets' 2024 campaign, Johnson's fifth-year option has been picked up, keeping him in New York through the 2026 season. Johnson was one of the Jets' most productive pass-rushers in 2023, logging 55 total tackles, including 7.5 sacks, and seven passes defended, with one pick-six, over 17 regular-season contests. The Florida State product is expected to be ready for the start of OTAs this spring and will likely remain one of New York's top edge rushers in 2025.
Sauce Gardner : Option officially picked up
The Jets exercised Gardner's fifth-year option Wednesday. Gardner has been one of the NFL's top cornerbacks since entering the league in 2022, so it's no surprise the Jets picked up his fifth-year option. The 24-year-old received first-team All-Pro honors in each of his first two seasons, tallying 132 total tackles, 31 passes defended, including two interceptions, and one forced fumble across 33 regular-season games during that span. Despite having the worst year of his career in 2024, Gardner is expected to bounce back and remain one of the league's best defensive playmakers in 2025.
Garrett Wilson : Fifth-year option made official
The Jets exercised the fifth-year option on Wilson's rookie contract Wednesday. General manager Darren Mougey said prior to the 2025 NFL Draft that New York would pick up the fifth-year options of London, Sauce Gardner and Jermaine Johnson (Achilles), and the team has now made each of those transactions official. Wilson is coming off three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and remains the clear top receiving option on the Jets' depth chart, with Allen Lazard, Josh Reynolds and Tyler Johnson behind him in the wide receiver room, and rookie second-round pick Mason Taylor a new addition to the tight end corps. Even if Justin Fields' dual-threat capabilities result in an overall decline in passing for this offense, Wilson figures to retain a tremendous target share following the offseason departures of WR Davante Adams and TE Tyler Conklin, and considering his current competition for volume. Picking up the No. 1 wideout's fifth-year option shouldn't make the Jets any less motivated to negotiate a long-term extension with Wilson, who will turn 25 in July.
Jordan Travis : Announces medical retirement
Travis (lower leg) informed the Jets on Wednesday of his intention to medically retire from the NFL. Travis, a 2024 fifth-round pick, missed his entire rookie year while rehabbing from a serious left leg injury sustained during his final season at Florida State, and which has now resulted in him being advised to step away from the game of football. In his statement, Travis writes: "I gave everything I had to the rehab process but despite all my efforts, my leg never responded the way we hoped. After much prayer and consultation with the doctors, medical experts and my agent, I've been medically advised to retire from the game I love so deeply."
Jermaine Johnson : Fifth-year option coming
Jets general manager Darren Mougey said Monday that the team intends to exercise the fifth-year options of Johnson (Achilles), Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner (hamstring), Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Johnson is working his way back from a right Achilles tear suffered Week 2 of the 2024 season, and he said in February that his recovery remains on track and he expects to be ready for the start of OTAs in spring, per John Flanigan of SNY.com. Having their fifth-year options exercised will keep all of Johnson, Wilson and Gardner in New York on their rookie deals through the 2026 season.
