Serra Sends Trigg Packing with First Round KO

Matt Serra hasn’t fought since last May. He’s openly spoken of retirement in recent months and speaks fondly of returning home, running his jiu-jitsu school and eating as much pasta as he wants to. But after his first-round knockout of Frank Trigg, Serra will be welcome to return to the UFC as many times as he wants to.

Serra and Trigg were both cautious in the opening moments of the first, but Serra unleashed a right hook just after the two minute mark that dropped Trigg to the canvas. Serra followed up with four unprotected and hard shots to Trigg’s unprotected head before Josh Rosenthal stopped the fight. Trigg protested the decision, but it was completely justifiable.

The knockout woke up the crowd at the Mandalay Bay who had sat through five straight decisions in undercard fights. For Trigg, the appearance is likely his last. He was nearly cut from the UFC after his loss to Josh Koscheck last year, and knew going into this bout that it was a make or break situation.
