"My brother said 'just stay here and I'll come back'" says Saroo Brierley, the man who lost his family for over two decades after he and his brother boarded a train so many years ago. Saroo fell asleep and when he woke up, his brother was gone.
5-year-old Brierley didn't know how to get back home.
He was then adopted by Australians, and his new mother put a map of India on the wall. Saroo says he would look at that map every morning and that it kept his memories alive.
People told him that he was trying to "find a needle in a haystack, you'll never find [your hometown]." All Saroo had to go off of was mental images of his mother and places he had been to as a child.
After he started using Google Maps, something clicked in Saroo's head, however. He realized that using Google Maps street view, information about train routes, and much diligence and hard work, he could figure out where his family was — assuming they were still there.
See the touching and spine-chilling end to Saroo's story in video at the top of this post.
