We all remember what we were doing on September 11, 2001. Initially, it was a tragedy, an airliner had crashed into one of the buildings of the Twin Towers. As the day went on, the events that followed quickly turned a terrible tragedy into the worst nightmare in American history. 9/11 was not only terrible and tragic, it is considered to have divided history. Nowadays, we speak of the "pre-9/11" and "post-9/11" world. Today, we remember the victims, and the Americans who have lost their lives fighting for this country. These are 5 videos that give a glimpse into the feelings that were felt on-air that terrifying, confusing day, the one that is still shaping our modern world.
5. The North Tower Collapses
A symbol of America's prosperity, New York City, and commerce the world over, the collapse of the North Tower was the first tangible damage to the New York skyline. While, the buildings' had been flaming for hours, the disappearance of an entire building made us all realize the gravity of what was taking place.
4. 6 Shots of the News at Once
In this video, audio fades between six different broadcasts, but six pictures are seen at once, showing how each second of 9/11 was covered. It's mind-blowing to think that this was all that was on TV that morning and seeing all of these reactions at once is overwhelming, and poignant.
3. The First News Reports
These moments of innocence preceded the horror that would follow. While a plane crashing into a building is tragic and sad, accidents do happen and the feeling was more shock than fear at this time. Watching the then naive newscasters talk so casually before 9/11 really happened is a chilling contrast to the reactions later in the day.
2. People Jumping from the Towers(Warning: Graphic Footage)
Terrified victims with nowhere to go, fire licking at their sides, eventually had no choice but to jump. While the footage is shocking and uncomfortable, the truth is that that jumping was likely the more pleasant way for these victims to pass, as being burned alive is a much more prolonged and excruciating process. Ultimately, these victims are a testament to the desperation and raw fear that was felt this tragic day.
1. The Second Plane Hits
This was the moment 9/11 went from a bizarre tragedy to a world changing event. Listening to the newscasters connect the dots and surmise that there was no way these events happened on accident is chilling. This was the connection we all virtually made at the same time, and it was at this moment, when we realized these acts were intentional acts against our country, that the world changed.
