Mike Spinner and I went down to San Diego yesterday to see what was popping off at the Mission Valley Skatepark on Clairemont Street. DC King of LA - Recap

DC King of LA - Day 2 - Bancroft

Sunday, June 24th. It was hot as hell. It was also Day 2 of the soon to be legendary DC King of Los Angeles competition. The spot was Hubert Howe Bancroft Middle School and the scene was thick. Once again, DC put together a solid street course in the main yard and so began the shredding. Qualifiers and Semifinals were held on the main course, with the finals held specifically to a ramp to picnic table. When it came down to it, things got hectic, with the top 3 or 4 riders getting super loose and throwing tricks you definitely wouldn't try by yourself. In the end, it was Josh Grossguth, hailing from Lancaster, CA who took the day. After a solid showing on the street course, Josh dominated the finals, throwing a late shuv, a big kickflip, a backside 180-late flip, and capped it all off with a massive frontside 180 heelflip that won the crowd and the judges over. DC King of LA - Day 3 - Barker Hanger

July 1st, 2007 was, as it is every year, Canada Day. More importantly, it was the 3rd stop of the DC King of Los Angeles Competition inside the Barker Hanger at the Santa Monica Airport. Once again, the scene was thick, and DC took no shorts putting together the day's course. On one side of the hangar, there was a street setup too good for your average contest. A big pyramid in the center, complete with benches and ledges across the top, with two massive quarters on either side, not to mention your standard flat rails, up rails, picnic tables, and etc. On the other side however, was the realness, a spot on replica of the Chino Hills Four Block which would play home to the day's finals. As usual, the kids were out in full force. Everybody was ripping, including Danny Way who managed a big ramp to ramp indy with no ACL in his knee. The competition got serious, with a flurry of action happening on the Four Block. It got so intense in fact, that a second "final final" round had to be instituted so the skaters could throw their tricks one at a time, as opposed to the constant traffic jam at the base of the stairs that had been going on throughout the day. The top three for the day included a couple of new faces, including young Javan Campello, who took third, and Chris Mendes who rolled through like a force of nature with a massive full cab flip, switch 360 flip, nollie 360, and a nollie frontside flips down the 4. Fan favorite Keelan Dadd came in second with a massive switch double heelflip, but with newcomer Mendes's victory, the leaderboard was thrown into disarray. DC King of LA - Day 4 - LACC

It all came down to this. The final stop of the DC King of Los Angeles competition was held at Los Angeles City College on July 7th, 2007. Once again, the sun was beating down, and the tension in the air was thick. With the leaderboard completely up in the air, the crown was wide open for the taking. The street course was sick as usual, but the real story of the day went down on a perfect replica of the Wilshire 10. The entire competition would come down to who would get the loosest down the stairs and on the rail. Needless to say, it went off, with the top 3 or 4 contenders battling fiercely for the win. Chris Mendes, who came in first at Barker Hanger, came in 3rd, but you couldn't prove it to us. Frontside flips down the stairs and over the rail, a kickflip boardslide down the 10, switch heels, a nollie frontside heel, and a back noseblunt. Keelan Dadd was the picture of style and consistency laying front boards, switch 50-50's, switch nosegrinds on the rail, and switch and nollie heelflips down the stairs. Vincent took the day with authority after sticking a switch big spin backside boardslide, and the capper, a switch 180 nosegrind to close it out. But it came down to Josh Grossguth and Vincent. While Josh came in 4th for the day, despite throwing a massive laser flip down the 10, he was still in the points race and the two were tied with 29. In the end, after much deliberation and confusion and yelling and waiting, the decision was handed down. Having won more days overall, it was decided that the King of Los Angeles crown would go to Vincent Alvarez. Of course, everyone who came out deserves credit. Everyone shredded, and among the top riders, it was a toss up as to who should hold the crown, but Vincent, with an overload of style and ability was the clear choice in the end. Congrats Vincent! Kettering, Ohio is officially a skate paradise. Rob Dyrdek and DC Shoes teamed up to build the nation's first true street skate park. Naturally, Rob had to stop in on Go Skateboarding Day and he brought his friends with him. Sean Malto, Devine Calloway(who was hurt and couldn't ride, too bad for all of us), Steve Berra, and Diesel himself made it pop. The local rippers got down to business and before the day was through Rob managed to make it rain something proper, throwing 5000 dollars he won from Berra on a bet into the crowd, causing utter madness to ensue. And as always, Banquet was there to record all the goods so here it is, all neat and tidy and topped with a bow. A 5000 dollar bow.
