Truck of Marijuana

Texas state cops seized nearly 4 tons of marijuana during a routine traffic stop after an officer pulled over a tanker truck packed to the gills with pot.

According to KRIS TV, truck driver Paul Anthony Simmons was arrested on Tuesday for possession of 3.9 tons of marijuana and is being held on $1 million bail.

The investigation took place in Corpus Christi, Texas, where 45-year-old Simmons was stopped for an inspection as part of a routine check on all commercial vehicles. The 1999 tanker truck had dozens of plastic bags inside filled with marijuana weighing 7,816 pounds. The weed has an estimated street value of $3.4 million.

Sergeant Johnny Hernandez of the Texas Department of Public Safety told NBC News that it was the largest drug bust in recent memory.

"It's a big, significant seizure," he said.

But this isn't the biggest drug bust of the year in the Southwest. In January officials seized almost 7 tons of marijuana (above) on the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona, according to the Arizona Daily Star.
