Retired State Trooper Mark Miscavish

Mark Miscavish, a retired state trooper, killed his wife and then himself on Thursday inside of a supermarket in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, reports CBS Philly. Pennsylvania State Police Department spokeswoman Maria Finn said that the murder-suicide took place just days after the 51-year-old shooter's wife, Tracie Miscavish, filed for divorce.

Investigators said that Miscavish went into County Market where his wife worked around 10 a.m. on Thursday with a gun and began searching for her. When he found Tracie in an upstairs office, he shot her dead and then himself.

According to court documents, the gunman had been previously arrested and was awaiting trial for simple assault, harassment and terroristic threats for threatening to do exactly what he did on Thursday. Days after his wife told him that she wanted to end their 30-year-marriage, an altercation between them on January 23 led to Miscavish pointing a gun at Tracie and threatening to kill the both of them. She managed to escape and immediately filed charges. On Thursday, Tracie was not so lucky.

On a Protection From Abuse Order application, Tracie wrote that her husband had said to her that he had “nothing to lose” and that if he could not have her, no one could.

Mark Miscavish retired from the state police in 2011 after 15 years.
