A nine-month pregnant woman was shot in the stomach by a man in Yonkers, New York at about 09:00 p.m. on Thursday night. Emergency surgery was performed and the baby was delivered, a girl, via cesarean. Somehow the woman, believed to be named Jasmine, in her 20s, and her baby are both now in stable condition in a Bronx hospital, reports ABC7.
The woman was shot in the upper stomach area by a man at her apartment building entrance on 541 Bronx River Road in Yonkers. The assailant is believed to have been wearing a grey-hooded sweatshirt, according to CBS New York.
Police have said that the woman was carrying a laundry bag when she was shot, cops added that they don't believe this to be a random attack. A neighbor told reporters:
She recognized me and said please help me, and I'm holding her hand, and she told me she got shot...
The building's surveillance cameras picked up most of the altercation between the woman and the man which ended in the gunman firing one shot. Security footage, which has been seen by some residents, say the man can be seen walking away calmly as the woman lies in pain.
Lohud.com reports that this probably isn't the first time that the woman was targeted for violence.
Neighbors believe the woman, who works as a nurse, moved to the Bronx River Road area to get away from a more unsafe neighborhood of Yonkers on the city's westside.
