Kathryn Kalikow, the daughter of former owner of the New York Post Peter Kalikow, was arrested for allegedly selling heroin on Craigslist with her boyfriend Brian Whalen. Prosecutors told the Post that the couple advertised their illegal drugs on the classified site and were arrested at their penthouse in the Bronx. Here's what you should know about this bizarre, high-profile bust.
1. They Were Selling Drugs on Craigslist
Kathryn and Brian posted an ad on Craigslist that said this:
High quality diesel pain relief available. Discreet & professional. No games; will only reply to likeminded individuals. Email name and number for response. Stamps, diesel, H train, dope, bundles, tickets, dog food.
2. They Were Busted in an Undercover Operation
The couple were soon caught selling drugs after a sting operation conducted by the NYPD. An undercover cop responded to the ad, telling the couple to meet him by the Thomas C. Giodano Middle School on Hoffman Street in Belmont, the Bronx. The cop and the drug dealers exchanged texts confirming the sale, saying that the drugs will cost $400 and an extra $40 for delivery. The couple drove a blue Volkswagen to the meeting area and got a text from the detective saying that he was close by. The cop wore a hoodie as he approached Brian, who knew he was busted. He soon confessed to the crime as another detective confronted Kathyrn.
3. Brian Took the Rap
Brian told cops he has a serious heroin addiction and needs treatment. “It was my idea to go on Craigslist and post the ad,” he told law enforcement. "I need treatment. I am a heroin addict, and to afford the drugs I agreed to sell some of the drug on consignment from the person I buy from."
The 27-year-old Kathryn told the police that she was holding onto the drugs for her boyfriend. She pulled out three plastic bags from her purse, each containing at least 10 packets of heroin.
4. They Both Face Charges
The couple were both charged with felony drug possession with intent to sell and released. They pleaded not guilty. Kathryn's lawyer Stacey Richman told the Post that the investigation is still ongoing. “It’s an unfortunate situation (when) any young folks are involved in drugs,” said Whalen’s lawyer, Marvin Ray Raskin. “We are addressing the addiction issue as we speak.”
5. Kathryn's Father Was a Newspaper Magnate
Kathryn Kalikow's father Peter is well known in New York for owning the Post from 1988 to 1993, when the paper went into bankruptcy. The 71-year-old was also a chairman of the city's MTA from 2001 to 2007 when he stepped down. Currently, Peter is busy managing his family's real estate firm at Park Avenue. In regards to his daughter's arrest, he told reporters that he and his wife Mary "are very concerned, and all we are concentrating on now is helping our daughter."
