India, India Bus Falls Off Bridge

At least 37 people are dead and 14 are left injured after a bus plunged off a bridge and into the Jagbudi river in India early Tuesday, reports the Hindustan Times.

The private luxury bus was traveling to Mumbai carrying 51 passengers on the Goa-Mumbai highway when the accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. It is believed that the bus driver, who is among the injured, may have fallen asleep at the wheel, losing control and sending the bus off the side of the bridge. The injured, who have mostly sustained head and arm injuries, were sent to nearby hospitals and the dead are still in the process of being identified.

"Three cranes were used along with gas cutters to rescue the injured who trapped in the wreckage. We are monitoring the health conditions of the injured. As per the advice of the doctors, the injured are been shifted to private hospitals or taken to Mumbai. The driver has survived the crash and his medical test has been done," Rajiv Jadhav, chief administrative and revenue officer of Ratnagiri said.
