Toronto Raptors Try to Squash Beef with Wale

A rep for the Toronto Raptors is trying to set the record straight on the verbal dust-up that occurred at Tuesday night’s Wizards-Raptors game in Washington with rapper Wale.

It all began after newly acquired Raptor Rudy Gay hit a 3-pointer to put Toronto up 43-39 in the second quarter and made a telephone gesture with his right hand to someone sitting courtside who’d been heckling him. The heckler, it turns out, was Wale, a rapper from D.C. signed to Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group and best known for his 2009 hit Chillin.

Matt Devlin, veteran Toronto Raptors commentator, noticed the exchange and had this to say on the air:

You see his (Gay’s) reaction and a fan heckling him, and supposedly this fan is well-known local rapper, Wale, locally here… Wale’s inspiring. And I’m sure somebody on Twitter can tell me exactly if they’ve ever heard of Wale. He’s not Drake; that’s for sure.

Wale fired off a tweet to Devlin, and made his way up to the announcers’ booth where he confronted him verbally, but inaudibly, apparently upset at being compared to Drake.

The Raptors rep told TMZ that there was no ill intent in the comment:

It’s a shtick that Matt and our analyst do consistently to poke fun at the fact neither is pop culture savvy.

He added that Devlin felt badly that Wale may have thought he was making fun of him.

Gay himself chimed in later on Twitter, assuring fans that it’s all love between the two.
