This is no joke, guys. To a perfect stranger, Brooke Greenberg looks like a normal toddler, but what they don't know is that she is actually a 20-year-old woman trapped inside the body of a small child. Okay, so "woman" may not be the best word to use since she is as mentally developed as she looks, a 1-year-old, but when was the last time you met a 20-year-old who is still a baby?
The Maryland native is unable to talk, still has her baby teeth and travels in a push chair — and doctors are unable to explain why, even after she was examined by some of the nation's most prestigious medical institutions.
Her father, Howard Greenberg, says:
From age 1 to 4, Brooke changed. She got a little bit bigger. But age 4, 4-to-5, she stopped.
The 20-year-old toddler requires constant care, just like any other youngster, says Brooke's mother, Melanie:
It's been 16 years of on-the-job training, giving her medicine, knowing when she's sick, knowing the right amount.
The couple has another daughter, Carly, who is three years younger than Brook, but who ages normally. Pictures show the sisters over the years as Carly grows up while the Brook stays exactly the same.
Brook's parents take the condition in stride, but know their daughter has a purpose.
"Brooke is the nucleus of our family. What if Brooke holds the secret to aging? We'd like to find out. We'd like to help people. Everybody's here for a reason. Maybe this is why Brooke is here," Howard Greenberg says.
If it's possible for a person to stop physically aging for 16 years, then maybe scientists can figure out exactly what it is that is causing this in Brook and apply it to medicine. Imagine what it would be like if you could stop aging before you turned old and gray. Brook could be the answer.
But the Greenbergs say they are happy with Brook just the way she is.
“If somebody knocked on the door right now and said, ‘It’s a guaranteed pill. Give this to Brooke and she’ll be fixed,’ well first I would say to him, ‘She’s not broken.’ And B, I would say, ‘Thank you, but no thank you,” Howard said in a video filmed for the “Katie” show.
