So Motown legend Tina Turner has renounced her U.S. citizenship in favor of the land of chocolate and cuckoo clocks, Switzerland.
A bit of the sting is taken out of the story when you realize that Turner has lived in Tobleroneland since 1995. Her longtime music and romantic partner, Erwin Bach, is German but has been based in Zurich since then.
Kusnacht is a long way from Nutbush, where Turner was born as Anna Mae Bullock in 1939. The 73-year-old singer is awaiting approval from Swiss immigration authorities before she can gain her new passport. Unlike the Gerard Depardieu's recent acceptance of Russian citizenship based on France's new exorbitant taxes on millionaires, Turner's move is more about convenience. The filing of two tax forms for all of those millions of dollars in two different countries must be a real pain in the ass.
A spokesperson for Turner, Karin Rhomberg, issued a statement to local newspaper Zuerichsee-Zeitung:
She appreciates the beautiful scenery, the friendly people, above all, they enjoy it, to be a private person. Your privacy will be respected here. She is happy, as they are treated in a friendly and unobtrusive manner.
And if nothing else this story gives us a reasonable excuse to post this:
