Wikipedia’s Most Visited Pages 2012: Facebook, One Direction Dominate

Swedish software engineer Johan Gunnarsson published the list of Wikipedia‘s most visited page list for 2012, and it turns out Facebook dominates as the number one most visited page with over 32 million page views this year.

The Wikipedia stats list used to get posted by the website itself, but stopped the practice in 2008.

The list in total reports the top 100 most visited. Check it out.

Here are the lucky pages that made the top 10:

1. Facebook
2. Wiki
3. Deaths in 2012
4. One Direction
5. The Avengers (2012 film)
6. Fifty Shades of Grey
7. 2012 phenomenon
8. The Dark Knight Rises
9. Google
10. The Hunger Games

Gunnarsson gives two explanations for “Facebook” getting the number one spot: Users are typing in Facebook into search engines intending to go to the website, but end up at Wikipedia — or users genuinely have an interest in the history of the websites such as Wikipedia and Google, which also made the list.

The list also includes other country’s stats. It’s interesting to see the difference in cultures. For instance, Americans search for more movies and Germans search for more television shows, like How I Met You Mother and The Big Bang Theory. One Direction also seems to be doing well. The British boy band made it on the lists of seven different countries.
