Staff Sgt.Robert Bales, the Army officer charged in the massacre of of 16 civilians in two Afghan villages, tested positive for steroids three days after the bloodbaths.

This according to Special Agent Matthew Hoffman, the investigator on the case who testified in a hearing Wednesday.

CBS reports the 39-year-old Bales “faces 16 counts of premeditated murder, six counts of attempted murder and a count of steroid use.”

His lawyers are reportedly hoping to leverage his his mental state in their defense, but Bales allegedly displayed knowledge of his wrongdoing when he “asked for help bleaching his blood-stained clothing and deliberately destroyed his computer,” CBS reports.
