William Dong Named as ‘Armed’ University of New Haven Student

William Dong has been named as the University of New Haven student who has been taken into custody after allegedly being seen with a rifle on campus, reports NBC Connecticut. Marking what was the third lockdown in a Connecticut college over the past month.

He’s alleged to have caused a day long lockdown at the University has police performed a methodical search of the campus. The search was conducted even after Dong was apprehended at around 1:30 p.m. local time. Cops received the 911 call about the possibility of an armed man close to the campus at around 1:10 p.m.

Here’s what you need to know:


1. Dong Was Armed With 2 Handguns and a Rifle

It’s alleged he had a permit for two handguns, that were believed to be loaded. Police also found a rifle, not on Dong’s person, but in his car, reports The Hartford Courant, that he didn’t have a permit for.

He’s charged with illegal possession of an assault weapons, breach of peace and other charges. He’s being held on a $500,000 bond.


2. Dong’s House Was Surrounded by Cops

Police have said that they had been to Dong’s house, at 1336 Stratfield Road in Fairfield, Connecticut (above) before but never for anything “this serious.”


3. He’s a Student of the University of New Haven

He is a commuter student from Fairfield, Connecticut attending the University of New Haven.


4. Police Found Clippings About Mass Shootings in Dong’s Possession

Along with a stash of ammunition at his home, police also found a collection of newspaper clippings relating to mass shootings, reports NBC Connecticut. His friends have said that this is all misunderstanding and that Dong was just confused about where he was allowed to carry guns. According to his friend, Dong has the weapons as part of his job working for an armored car company transporting money.


5. He’s a Fan of Violent Video Game

Dong’s Facebook page indicates that he is a fan of the video game Gears of War.
