The Mormon Church Buys 2 Percent of Florida to Become State’s Largest Land Owner

On Thursday the Mormon Church finalized a deal that will make it the largest private land owner in the state of Florida. The Church of Later-day Saints paid $565 million of the publicly traded mega-realestate company St. Joe Co. who in 2011 was ranked the second largest private land owners in Florida.

The land purchased by the Mormon Church comprises around 2 Percent of the state of Florida clocking in at an astounding 400,000 acres in the state's panhandle region. The purchase extends into parts of Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, and Wakulla counties, according to RT.

Before this purchase, the Mormon Church already owned a massive cattle ranch in Central Florida, straddling three counties and south east of Orlando.
