One of the NYPD officers who was at the rogue ride when a group of bikers attacked Alexian Lien, but did nothing to save the stricken man, has been named as Detective Samir Gonsalves, reports The Daily News.
While driving on Manhattan's West Side Highway, Alexian Lien, his wife Rosalyn Ng, and their 2-year-old daughter were accosted by a biker group called the Hollywood Stuntz. The bikers intimidated the family to such an extent that Lien panicked and drove through a group of the bikers, gravely injuring one, Edwin Mieses, who now lies in a medically induced coma.
The bikers chased down Lien's car, pulled him out and assaulted him. News later emerged that two off-duty police officers were among the riders and witnessed the assault. Today, Gonsalves was named.
Here's what you need to know:
1. Gonsalves is One of the Cops Who Was Present at the Assault
It's reported that there were two NYPD officers present, off-duty, when The Hollywood Stuntz attacked Alexian Lien and scared-the-hell out of his wife, Rosalyn Ng, and the couple's two-year-old daughter. One of those officers is alleged to have joined in the attack, he has not yet been named. It's reported that Gonsalves did not help the bikers assault Lien and may not have been a witness to the beat-down.
2. In August He Was Suspended From Duty
In August 2013, Gonsalves was suspended to fighting with an assistant district attorney, Jacqueline Rizk, on the streets of Astoria, Queens, reported The New York Post.
The Post reported at the time:
Gonsalves pushed one of the officers and was wrestled to the ground, cops said. While his colleagues were cuffing Gonsalves, of Brooklyn’s 88th Precinct, Rizk allegedly jumped on a cop’s back.
The two were reported to be dating and were drunk. The altercation happened at 10:15 a.m.
3. Gonsalves Didn't Come Forward of his Own Accord
Gonsalves was tracked through the license plate of his bike. His superiors are said to be incensed that he did not come forward and notify them about his presence at the assault.
4. He's Been With the NYPD For 10-Years
Gonsalves is a ten-year-veteran in the NYPD. He was assigned to the 88th precinct in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.
5. The Other Cop's Name Remains a Mystery
Cops have not-yet named the other undercover NYPD officer who was more directly involved in the assault, reports The New York Post. That officer is reported to have been suspended from duty pending an investigation into his actions. The officer in question had previously told detectives that he didn't stop the assault because he arrived to late and the bikers had already begun to leave the scene. In new video however it's shown that he took an active part in trashing Alexian Lien's Range Rover.
