Mary Francis DeLorenzo Knight has been revealed as one of the 12 victims from Monday's Naval Yard shooting in Washington, D.C. The 51-year-old worked for Naval Sea Systems Command inside the building where Aaron Alexis opened fire on innocent civilians.
Here are five fast facts you need to know about Mary Frances DeLorenzo Knight.
1. She Was Recently Promoted
Knight joined the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters in August 2009. She was recently promoted to Deputy Command Information Officer of Enterprise Cyber Security in the Naval Sea System Command, according to the FayObserver. She worked previously as a information assurance manager in the IT department.
2. She Had Multiple Degrees
According to the Washington Post, Knight had multiple degrees. She first graduated from Fayetteville Technical Institute in 1983, then continued her education at Raleigh-Durham’s Campbell University, where she received a bachelor's degree in 1998. Her education grew as she obtained a master's degree in computer resources and information management from St. Louis' Webster University in 2004. She also had a degree from National Defense University, which she completed in 2011.
3. Here Children Were Her Pride and Joy
Knight leaves behind two daughters, of whom she was "very proud."
"Her daughters were her everything," said Theodore Hisey, a family spokesman. "They are in their 20s, so it was all about their colleges, their needs."
"Her No. 1 passion in life was my sister and [me]," said Mary's daughter Nicole. "She loved us more than life itself.”
Knight's eldest daughter got married less than two weeks ago. The family spent time at a bed and breakfast in North Carolina to celebrate, according to the Washington Post.
"I hope there is such a thing as heaven. You know, you pray for your family and sometimes I wonder. I really do," said Lilly DeLorenzo, Mary's mother. "I'd just like to know. I'd like to have a body. I'd like to know something."
4. Knight's Family Is Heartbroken
Things had been great for the Knight family as of late. Mary just received a promotion. One of her daughters had just gotten married. They were happy. And then Aaron Alexis happened.
Mary's mother told ABC Local about how she would speak on the phone with her daughter every day. They would call each other all the time.
"Sometimes at 6 or 7 o'clock in the morning," Lilly said. "Today, I'm waiting for her call."
5. She Just Became a Professor
Aside from her long career in cyber security, Knight recently started a side-job as a professor. According to the Washington Post, she had just become an adjunct assistant professor at Northern Virginia Community College this summer. Her fall semester classes had started on August 21; she taught spreadsheet software and software design.
