The Cleveland monster Ariel Castro took his own life on September 3 by hanging at a prison in Ohio, reports The Associated Press via The New York Post.

Here's what you we know so far...


1. Castro Was Found Hanged in His Cell

Castro, 53, was found hanged in his prison cell at the Correction Reception Center in Orient, Ohio around 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday September 3. He was transported to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just before 11 p.m.

"Upon finding inmate Castro, prison medical staff began performing life saving measures," said JoEllen Smith of the Ohio Department of Corrections. "Shortly after he was transported to OSUMC where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 pm. A thorough review of this incident is underway and more information can be provided as it becomes available pending the status of the investigation."

Because of the notoriety of his case, Castro was kept away from the rest of the prison population.

"He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals," Smith said.


4. Castro's Family is Angry That They Weren't Notified of His Death Sooner

Castro's brother-in-law, Juan Alicea, said that the family was notified of his death by the warden of the prison about 1 a.m. Alicea said that the family is angry that it learned about the death from media reports first.


5. Castro Was Serving a Life Sentence in Prison

Castro had been sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 additional years for the rape, kidnapping and torture of Michelle Knight, Gina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. Berry, who Castro fathered a daughter with, escaped on May 6 after nine years in captivity and alerted authorities. The child is now six and Castro had been told at his sentencing hearing that he would never have any contact with her. At the hearing Castro told the court that the sex that went on while the girls were in captivity had been consensual
