Police in Henderson, Nevada, are charging 16-year-old Adrian Navarro-Canales with the gruesome stabbing murders of his 40-year-old mother, Elvira, and his 9-year-old brother, Cesar, reports CBS Nevada.
Canales was originally thought to be a victim, with his mother suspected of committing a murder-suicide against her two sons before killing herself.
He has been missing since Friday. His identification documents, including passport, were all in the apartment at the time police made entry.

1. The Mother and Son Were Killed on September 17 According to Police
Authorities are acting on the belief that Elvira Canales-Gomez and her son, Cesar, were killed on Tuesday September 17. Their bodies were not found until September 21 at their apartment on the 11000 block of Eastern Avenue near Sunridge Heights Parkway in Henderson, Nevada, south-east of Las Vegas. The alarm was raised when Elvira Canales-Gomez's daughter couldn't get in contact with her family.
Elvira Canales-Gomez's body was found in the bathtub with her son, Cesar, found lying close to her, reports The Las Vegas Sun.
The Associated Press reports that the boy's mother was "stabbed multiple times" and his young brother, Cesar, stabbed once.
2. Navarro-Canales Had Been Violent Towards His Mother in the Past
The boy's aunt told police that in the past Navarro-Canales had been abusive to his mother and had physically attacked her by pushing and punching her. KTNV in Las Vegas reports that the police affidavit on Canales describes him as "extremely volatile, defiant and violent."
3. He is Reported to Have Been Homesick
Navarro-Canales had been enrolled at Cornado High School in Henderson but hadn't been present at the school since November 2012. Friends told 8 News Now that the boy was unhappy living in Nevada and wanted to return to his native Mexico. Elvira Canales-Gomez's Facebook page lists her has being from Guadalajara, Mexico.
KTVN reports he spent much of his time playing video games.
4. His Family Were Killed the Day After His 16th Birthday
The day before Elvira Canales-Gomez and Cesar Navarro were killed, a party had been held at the family home home for Adrian Navarro-Canales' 16th birthday. Police believe that the mother and son were killed between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. on September 17. reports KTNV.
Navarro-Canales' father, Enrique Velasquez, says he spoke to his son on September 18 via text. His son had texted him to apologize for not talking to him during the day and that the rest of his family were fine and asleep.
His mother's boyfriend, Carlos Rubio-Villanueva, is reported to have been present at the birthday celebrations, according to The AP.
5. He Stayed With the Corpses in the Family Home For at Least a Day
It's believed that Navarro-Canales spent a few days in the house with the corpses of his family. He's reported to have fled the area before Friday. His last known-contact at this time was a text message he sent to his mother's boyfriend to tell him everything was fine. Henderson Police Detective Keith Paul told reporters:
Detectives initially thought that the 16-year-old could be a victim of some sort. During the course of the investigation he went from being someone who was missing to now someone who is considered a suspect.
The Associated Press reports that police visited the home on three occasions between the time the Elvira Canales-Gomez and Cesar Navarro were killed and the time their bodies were found. It wasn't until September 21 when police finally broke into the apartment and found the rotting corpses. Friends and relatives had contacted the police about Elvira Canales-Gomez not showing up for work and Cesar Navarro not being present at school.
