Two days after the murder and the afternoon before his arrest, Maxwell Sherman appeared on camera with the New York CBS affiliate saying that he was "amazed" and "surprised" at the news of Daverin's death. He told the reporter that he had been present the night of the murder.
Sherman: I met her for like five minutes.
Gusoff: So you were here with this group that was just hanging out?
Sherman: Around 7 o’clock, yeah.
Gusoff: What was everyone doing?
Gusoff: What was everybody doing? Just hanging?
Sherman: They were chilling by the soccer post or whatever. I just rode by and saw my friend Steve, and got a cigarette from him.
Sherman raised his eyebrows in surprise.
Gusoff: And what’s your reaction to this now?
Sherman: Amazed; kind of. It’s right in the middle of town; surprised.
Gusoff: And there was nothing going on in the group last night that would suggest somebody was getting hurt?
Sherman: Nah, everybody was just chilling; hanging out.
Scratches and cuts are visible on Sherman's face on the interview footage.
2. The Victim Was Found Naked and Strangled
Sherman was charged with second degree murder on Sunday in a Rockville Center court. According to The New York Daily News, Daverin died of strangulation.
Daverin was found dead around 10 p.m. on Saturday night by some friends. Her body was left in naked, except for her boots, and left in a "very awkward position looking like there's no chance that if she was alive she'd be in that position," according to an interview with one of the boys who found her. She was also covered in her own blood.
3. Sherman Pleaded Not Guilty
In Sherman's Sunday court appearance, the 18-year-old pleaded not guilty to the second degree murder charges. He is set to make his second court appearance on Wednesday, according to the Daily Mail.
During his CBS interview, Sherman admitted to meeting Daverin "for like five minutes."
