Jared Remy, the 34-year-old son of Red Sox broadcasting legend and former Sox player Jerry Remy, has been charged with the murder of girlfriend Jennifer Martel. According to Martel's uncle, the two were together for about five or six years and had a four-year-old daughter together.
Watch this morning's press conference announcing the charges:
Here's what you should know about this breaking story.
1. Martel's Daughter Was Home When She Died
Remy allegedly stabbed her to death last night in their Waltham, Massachusetts, apartment while her daughter was home. The child is in protective custody. Jared was taken to a hospital for examination last night immediately after his arrest but it is still unclear as to why.
Police say there was evidence of a struggle between the two all over the couple's Waltham townhouse. The altercation allegedly came to an end on the patio where an eye witness says Remy stabbed Martel repeatedly with a knife.
The prosecutor told CBS that Remy was covered in blood when the police arrived.
This morning, inside the patio at the unit at 1203 Stearns Hill Road, was a large bloodstain lying next to a small pink plastic tricycle. Ryan said Martel was found lying in the patio.
2. He Was Arrested 2 Days Prior to the Killing for Beating Martel

Remy had just been arrested on Tuesday and released on Wednesday of this week on a charge of assaulting Martel. According to CBS, police say Remy pushed Martel into a mirror in their home.
Crazy thing is the Martel family has been saying for years that Remy's son would kill her one day.

3. He Had a History of Steroid Use

The Globe reported that in 2009, while working for the Red Sox security, he was targeted in a steroid probe and fired.
The investigation uncovered no evidence that the security guards had sold any performance enhancing drugs to players, however, Remy was found to have sold drugs to the other fired security guard, Nicholas Alex Cyr.
However, Remy did tell the Boston Globe that he had discussed his steroid use with an aid of David Ortiz, who was found guilty of steroid use later that year. Ortiz's aid later denied that the conversation took place.
4. He Had a Previous Arrest Involving Another Girlfriend
In 2005 he was arrested at his father's home for assaulting his former girlfriend.
The Herald News reports that three restraining orders have been taken out for the name Jared Remy since 2005.
5. Jerry Remy's Other Son Has Had Similar Issues

Jared's older brother, Jordan Remy, was arrested in 2010 for "grabbing a woman's crotch" outside a sports bar.
After a brief conversation with the woman inside a south Boston sports bar, Jordan Remy followed her outside and groped her. The then 29-year-old Remy was charged with indecent assault and battery.
Police at the scene said that he appeared intoxicated and agitated. He was held on a $2,500 bail.
