Notorious hacker Guccifer is looking to release reportedly steamy emails between former Secretary of State Colin Powell, 76 and Croina Cretu, 45 a Romanian politician. The threat prompted to Powell to make a statement denying that there was an affair.
Colin Powell married his wife Alma in 1962 and they have been together for over 50 years.
Here is what you need to know about the woman at the center of this story:
1. She and Colin Powell Shared 'Very Personal Emails'
According to Colin Powell's statement, the two met around 10 years ago:
We met when I was Secretary of State and she was an assistant to the President of Romania. We occasionally attended the same diplomat and international meetings. After I left the Department of State in January 2005 we stayed in touch via email.
However, Powell writes, over time the emails became of a "very personal nature, but did not result in an affair. Those type of emails ended a few years ago. There was no affair then and there is not one now."
He concludes by saying that the two have continued to keep in touch but have seen each other in several years.
2. In 2011 She Wanted to 'Sip Wine' with Powell, Naked
The New York Post quotes from the emails which span from 2005 until very recently demonstrating how intimately the two spoke. One 2005 email exchange shows Cretu saying to Powell,
Good weather to make you come...
and his response?
You and the weather could makethat happen
At some point, Powell must have stop reciprocating because one February 2011 email written from Cretu to Powell saying, "Sip a glass of wine with me, as you used to tell me— advising me to lie neck [naked] on tha sofa.. Iamsorry, weare completely deplorable as we don’t assume what we had together"
Then, a few months later in November 2011 she wrote again to Powell saying:
Hi, Imiss you, Ihope to be at least afriend to you. I’veloved you too, much, too, many years. wife, children otr daughters they all never pray for yours Isis [did]... butifond finally a reaistc love... I never did somethign wrong, but Iam a perpetual the pyr [payer] of the bill. Love could endure anything, but wihout reciporocity, nothing id [is] posinnle [possible].
3. He Told Her to Delete their Emails in July
In July of this year, Powell wrote Cretu concerned that Guccifer was hacking politicians email account, "The hacker is driving everyone here crazy," the New York Post quotes:
The hacker gets addresses from my contact list which he got when he hack[ed] into President Bush’s account...our security people have been chasing him for months. He may have lots of your emails, maybe not, so best to delete all between us.
4. She is a Senate Member and Parliamentarian
Cretu is a prominent Romanian politician and met Colin Powell while she was a spokesperson for Ion Illiescu while he was the President of Romania.
According to the bio on her website, Cretu was elected to the Romanian Senate in 2004 from the Social Democratic Party and then elected to the European Union Parliament in 2007. In the EU Parliament she serves on the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs.
The Social Democratic Party formed out of the ashes of a formerly communist-sympathizing party and has received criticism from the Romanian press that the party still harbors communists.
Romania suffered under a repressive communist and Moscow-controlled government until the 1989 revolution. Romania joined NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007.
In the EU Parliament, Cretu also sits among the Party of European Socialists.
5. Guccifer has Hacked a Number of Politician's Emails
Guccifer was in the news most recently for hacking into the email accounts of several Bush family members as well as a Senator, a UN official, and many more, according to The Smoking Gun.
The Smoking Gun, which seems to be a favorite of Guccifer, also received information that he had hacked "Sex And the City" author Candace Bushnell in May 2013 and posted parts of an unpublished manuscript using her Twitter account.
