Jonathan Mills, the father of the NSA whistleblower’s girlfriend, Lindsay Mills, says he is “still shocked” by the news about his daughter’s boyfriend, Edward Snowden, reports ABC News.

Mills said his daughter and Snowden had been dating for about four or five years and that the two lived together in an apartment in Hawaii before Snowden leaked secrets about the National Security Agency’s PRISM program to the world. The whistleblower is reportedly now on the run and hiding out somewhere in Hong Kong.

Mills said that he has only contacted his daughter through text message and that she is “holding up as well as can be expected” since the the controversy broke out. He described 29-year-old Snowden as “very nice, shy and reserved,” but that he is still shocked by the news about him.

“He’s always had strong convictions of right and wrong, and it kind of makes sense,” Mills said. “But still shocked.”

Snowden’s girlfiend, Lindsay, wrote on her blog of her distraught since he left her after leaking details of a secret National Security Agency surveillance program to two newspapers.

“Surely there will be villainous pirates, distracting mermaids, and tides of change in this new open water chapter of my journey,” Lindsay wrote. “But at the moment all I can feel is alone.”

When asked if he had a message for Snowden, Mills said, “Just wish him good luck and he’s got my love.”
