Ali Syed (above), a 20 year old part-time student, has been identified as the shooter in the Southern California freeway murders that occurred this morning.
Syed is believed to have killed a woman in her home in Ladera Ranch and driven away in a stolen black SUV, from there he drove to Tustin, California near the 55 Freeway. He crashed his SUV and performed a carjacking, but did not harm the motorist. Syed did however shoot a bystander who was wounded but his injuries are not life-threatening. Ali Syed drove off in a Dodge pickup.
Police then report that Syed began firing indiscriminately at passing cars on State Route 55.
The pickup then ran low on gas and Syed carjacked another car, this time a BMW, and this time he executed his victim. After driving to a parking lot, Syed stole a another pickup and shot at two men, killing one and wounding another. From there Syed was seized upon by police, he killed himself before he could be arrested.
1. He Lived at the Residence Where the Shooting Began
The Shooting is believed to have begun on this street at 5 Red Leaf Lane, in Ladera Ranch, California. Shots were heard in the very early hours of the morning before Syed left the house in a black SUV.
2. A Neighbor Heard the Gunshots
Neighbor, Jason Glass, told KTLA 5 That he Heard 4-5 Loud "Pops" in Early Hours of the Morning, before hearing a car speed away from the house close to 5 a.m.
3. He Was a Student at Saddleback College
Saddleback is a Community College in Mission Viejo, California. Syed was believed to be taking just one class at the college. Saddleback has over 26,000 students, and is most reknowned for its Nursing, Physics, Environmental Studies, and Chemistry departments.
4. He Had No Previous Criminal Record
It has been confirmed by the Orange County Sheriff's Department that Syed had no previous criminal charges, outstanding warrants nor was he sought after in relation to any other cases.
5. He Killed Three People in Three Separate Incidents in Southern California
Throughout the very early morning of the 19th, Syed when on a murderous rampage that took him from his home in Ladera Ranch, to Tustin, about 20 miles away, before Syed ended it all at an intersection in the city of Orange by taking his own life.
6. He Turned the Gun on Himself Before he Was Apprehended
Police tracked Syed to the city of Orange, as they begun to close in, Syed exited the vehicle and shot himself, dying at the scene. It is believed that Syed was armed with a shotgun. Kenneth Caplain, a financial planner in Orange City, saw the entire incident. He told the LA Times:
It's scary.... This just happened right here,It's ludicrous
But he added his own personal view of the circumstance:
That's a bad guy, doesn't bother me at all.
7. It is Still Unclear What Connection Syed Had to the First Victim
Police have confirmed that the Syed was not related to the first person he shot. The home is believed to have been that of Syed's parents, it's unclear what connection the woman had to the family or what she was doing in the home. Jim Amormino, an Orange County Sheriff's Spokesman, confirmed that the woman was not Syed's mother.
8. One of His Victims Has Been Named as 69 Year Old Melvin Lee Edward
Syed carjacked Melvin Lee Edward, 69, Edward was driving a BMW. Edward was ordered to walk to the sidewalk, then Syed executed the man. Edward was resident of the Laguna Hills section of Orange County.
9. Another was Named as Jeremy Lewis
Lewis was shot near the parking lot where Syed carjacked his second pick-up truck. Lewis, 26, worked as a plumber and was from Fullerton, California.
10. Police Are Still Without a Motive For Any of the Killings
Authorities are currently analyzing six different crime scenes but have no leads nor motive for the killings so far. No possible accomplices are being sought.
