For all of the bellyaching people do about the culture industry, there's no denying that it can use its power for good if it wants to. In the aftermath of the horrifying earthquake in Haiti that has killed and displaced thousands, Wyclef Jean's Yele Haiti foundation has raised over $1,000,000 through a simple program that allows individuals to donate $5 by texting "Yele" to 501501 on any mobile phone. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, not to be trifled with in the arena of philanthropy, have also given $1 million from their Jolie-Pitt Foundation. Paris Hilton, Ben Stiller and Lindsay Lohan are campaigning for donations as well. Well, one out of three ain't bad. I urge you, if you have any spare funding, to consider donating to the relief effort in some way yourself.
