Heaviest Music of 2009 So Far

Florence and the Machine

2009 is more than half over, so it's time for a mid year best-of list. Here are my favorite songs of the year, to date.

1. Animal Collective – My Girls

from Chad von Nau on Vimeo.

2. Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks

from Suspicious Sounds on Vimeo.

3. Florence and the Machine – Cosmic Love. Based on its title alone this song sounds like it's destined to be very, very bad. I was bracing myself for totally over-the-top teenage bombast and, well, that's exactly what I got. There's huge Stevie Nicks vocals, a fucking harp, and badass drums – but it never becomes too much. You need a great producer to pull this stuff off. I don't know who produced this but I tip my hat. This is as good as pop music gets in 2009.

8. James Blackshaw – Cross
9. Magnolia Electric Company – O! Grace
10. Neko Case – I'm an Animal
11. Heartless Bastards – The Mountain
