Who would have thought that Pixar would have become one of the best movie studios on Earth? From their early flicks like Toy Story and Finding Nemo that were just fancy CGI kid stuff to their later films like Wall-E and Up that are actually geared more towards adults than the toddler set, John Lasseter's baby is one of the most respected institutions in Hollywood. But with respect, of course, comes rip-offs. Because Pixar's movies are animated, it's a lot easier to make cheap knock-offs of them, and in this feature I'll show you some of the funniest ones.
An Ant's Life - Equally ripping of A Bug's Life and Antz, this is the first Pixar ripoff I could find. And boy, is it bad. An ant named Thang navigates a horribly-rendered backyard full of stereotypes to do... something. I couldn't actually figure out what the plot of this one was. These insects diddle around on a patch of dirt and some of them have accents. I had to lay down because the horrible 3D models with no textures made my head hurt.
The Little Cars - So Pixar's Cars boasted voice work by Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, and George Carlin. Who did South American animators Video Brinquedo get for their knock-off series The Little Cars? Lord if I know, but listening to them makes me want to kill people. This utterly charmless cash-in has spawned three sequels, and amazingly each one looks more ghetto than the last.
Ratatoing - This may be the most famous of the Pixar ripoffs, and for good reason. While Ratatouille is considered by many the film that bridges the gap between the studio's early efforts and its mature new movies, this Brazilian production manages to miss the point entirely while looking like an enormous, hilarious, incompetent piece of trash. Produced by Video Brinquedo, who you will remember from The Little Cars, Ratatoing has all the graphical style of a Nintendo 64 game and was actually released in the States on DVD by Branscombe International, who obviously care not for lawsuits or quality.
Whats Up: Balloon To The Rescue - So Up was by far Pixar's most emotionally affecting effort, touching on aging, lost love and broken dreams. So what do our pals at Video Brinquedo do with it? Turn it into a shiny nightmare in which a bunch of horribly animated cartoon people sit around a room yelling at each other. You can watch the whole damn thing on YouTube if you hate yourself and want to die.
