The 20 Awesomest Obscure Action Movies

The best way to cope with any bad feeling is to watch movies featuring explosions, violence, and awesome fight scenes. These 20 action movies may not bother with "plot" or even "acting," but they do feature some strong doses of sweet, sweet violence.

Pathfinder

Pathfinder

So there's this bunch of Vikings out raiding and they leave behind a kid who is adopted by the local Native American tribe, but then the Vikings come back years later and only one man can stop them. Can you guess who that might be? This gloriously ridiculous premise sets up Pathfinder, a movie featuring very little of that pesky dialogue and a whole lot of over the top violence, though what little dialogue there is just provides the ridiculous note in an unintentional action-comedy. You always have to admire when the brainless action movie shoots for the philosophical only to slip in the puddles of blood and land next to the severed head of "deep."

Check out a clip of the grown up Native American-Viking boy beginning to avenge his family here.

Universal Soldier: Regeneration

Universal Soldier: Regeneration

Like one of those long-delayed reunion tours that's slightly embarrassing, the surprisingly not-terrible Universal Soldier: Regeneration features the triumphant return of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren to the series that... they starred in one time. (It's not like Universal Soldier was a classic-classic). In the opposing corner, former UFC Heavyweight Champ Andre Arlovski bringing a little modern flavor to these icons of cheesy 80s action movies, and the overall tone of the movie is much darker and realistic than in previous installments.  Surprisingly, it's not terrible, though aiming something as enjoyably ridiculous as Universal Soldier in the direction of "gritty" is always a little puzzling.

Check out a fight scene from the movie here.

La Femme Nikita

La Femme Nikita

Before there was a TV series and before there was a remake, there was Luc Besson's La Femme Nikita. Don't worry about the Frenchness, Besson has action movie chops worthy of praise. La Femme Nikita is a touching story about a little teenage punk kid growing up to be a deadly femme fatale, and by touching, I mean she carries a large handgun and kills lots of people in violent ways, the sort of touching a skinny waif packing a hand cannon inspires.

Check out a clip of Nikita getting her violence on here.

OneChanBara

Onechanbara: Samurai Bikini Squad

Onechanbara is of those glorious movies you can judge entirely by the cover. It's hot chicks in bikinis and other sexy outfits wielding samurai swords doing battle with...something. Sorry, I got distracted by the whole hot chicks in bikinis and sexy outfits waving swords around. While it won't exactly put you on the path to intellectual enlightenment, it is a good way to spend 90 minutes watching hot chicks in sexy outfits kill things over and over again.

Check out this awesome fight scene from the movie.

Blood and Bone

Michael Jai White's non-Black Dynamite movie for 2009, Blood and Bone is a classic entry in the guy gets out of prison and gets back into the underground movie genre, though very few of them feature real fighters like Gina Carano, Kimbo Slice, and Bob Sapp. Julian Sands also appears in a classic "Hey, that's the guy from Warlock!" moment. Blood and Bone is notable for being a pretty great direct to video movie as well as for keeping its fights (mostly) real. It's more like MMA than classic kung fu movie, but the realism just adds to the thrill.

Check out this clip of Bone taking out a guy who looks a lot like King Kong like it's nothing.
