The Jack Reacher character is popular fiction author Lee Child’s brain-baby — brain-child seems redundant here — so it should come as no surprise that the cynicism among Reacher traditionalists is at a fever pitch following the Jack Reacher movie trailer, which chronicles the events of Child’s novel, One-Shot. The nods to last year’s ultra-slick, testosterone-drenched gem Drive are unmistakable, as are the painfully unmotivated gesticulations, or lack thereof, by the usually aggressive Cruise, who seems content going through the motions. Yet that’s not what’s really bothering fans of Child’s series of books (a group of which I am a member; I’m currently devouring the first book). The fact of the matter is … Tom Cruise is not Jack Reacher. He never could be. Reacher is John Rambo, the kind of guy who doesn’t give a damn about a slick '70s muscle machine or what the hell his hair looks like at any part of the day. He takes off on foot with minimal supplies and you’d be damned should you cross him and anything resembling a blunt or sharp instrument remains in the vicinity. In the end, nothing about this trailer connotates it being a Jack Reacher film, much less even starring the Jack Reacher character (other than the creative title, I guess). This is just another example of Hollywood snatching a ready-made, built-in audience for the sake of advanced ticket sales and not much else. But, what can you do? Oh, I know! Don’t buy a ticket.
