Truly, the fact that Triumph the Insult Comic Dog has as lengthy and vast a legacy to warrant a “Best Of” collection is something of a, well, triumph. This Yugoslavian Mountain Hound with the “regular dog accent” (which actually sounds distinctly Eastern European) first appeared in 1997 on NBC’s Late Night With Conan O’Brien and has been insulting celebrities (and fans of those celebrities) ever since, occasionally attending the Westminster Dog Show for a quick “humping” or the MTV Music Video Awards, where he once asked Jennifer Lopez if he could sniff her butt (“For a dog, it’s like climbing Mount Everest”). Some highlights of Triumph’s career include berating the entire state of New Jersey while at the Meadowlands to interview Jon Bon Jovi and humiliating everyone in line to catch the premiere of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones at New York City’s Ziegfeld Theater (an event at which Triumph has a run-in with Blackwolf the Dragon Master). This semi-lovable puppet canine is pretty much a one-joke wonder (for me to poop on! — I keed, I keed), but one who rarely overstays his welcome; in fact, kudos to comedian/puppeteer Robert Smigel for realizing all these years that a very little Triumph goes a very long way. FYI, in my own personal Netflix account, The Best of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog was “Recommended based on your interest in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn.” Huh.
