Nick Diaz vs. BJ Penn elevated to main event

Just over a week before he was to defend his UFC welterweight title against Carlos Condit, Georges St-Pierre has been forced off the UFC 137 card due to injury.

UFC President Dana White delivered the news via Twitter.

“I just land in NYC and what do I always say!? I have to deal with bad shit everyday!! GSP is out with an injury!! #oneofthosedays,” offered White on the 140-character social networking medium, before following up with further details in a pair of subsequent tweets.

“It’s GSP’S knee. We will sit Carlos to wait for GSP. It’s looking so far like he could be ready in a couple months. Still early to tell tho. Nick Diaz vs BJ Penn is the main event.”

This is a devastating blow to the October 29 event that has already gone through some changes at the top of the card.

Originally, St-Pierre was set to defend the welterweight title against Diaz, the former Strikeforce champion making his return to the UFC after a nearly five-year hiatus. When he failed to appear for a series of press events to promote the bout, the UFC removed Diaz from the main event, replacing him with Condit.

The following day, he was booked opposite Penn in the co-main event, taking the spot vacated by Condit’s main event promotion. Diaz will now serve as half of the headlining duo after all due to today’s unexpected announcement.
