Chael Sonnen appeared before the Calfornia State Athletic Commission today, and his suspension has been reduced to six months, though the $2,500 fine remains.
Sonnen tested positive for a performance enhancing substance following his submission loss to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 this past August. His suspension was originally set to be an entire year, but a motion to uphold the ruling fell short.
The former top contender explained today that the condition of hypogonadism required testosterone therapy, thus resulting in a positive test. Sonnen is injected with testosterone shots to counteract his ailment twice a week.
He will be able to compete again as early as March 2, which comes just under seven months after he was defeated by Silva in one of the best comebacks of 2010.
