Alves, Kampmann, flyweights on mark for Sydney card

All fighters for the UFC on FX 2 card hit their target weights on Thursday and are official for Friday’s show.

UFC on FX: Alves vs. Kampmann takes place Friday at the Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia, where Thursday’s official weigh-in event took place. The main card will air live on the FX cable network at 9 p.m. Eastern. Six fights on the preliminary card will air live on Fuel TV at 6 p.m. And the night’s first fight will stream at the UFC’s Facebook fan page at 5:30 p.m.

Main event welterweights Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann each hit their marks. Alves, who has struggled with making weight in the past, again utilized nutritionist and diet coach Mike Dolce during his training camp. The former welterweight title challenger weighed in at 170.5 pounds; Kampmann weighed the same.

Friday’s card will also feature the debut of the flyweight division in the UFC. A pair of bouts, which essentially amount to semifinal tournament fights, take place on the main card to determine the two fighters who will meet for the UFC’s first 125-pound championship.

Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall, widely regarded as the top flyweight in the world, weighed in at 125.5 pounds for his UFC debut – wearing boxers adorned with an Australian flag. His opponent, Demetrious Johnson, a former bantamweight title challenger dropping to flyweight for the first time, also came in at 125.5.

And another former UFC bantamweight title challenger, Joseph Benavidez, also had no issues making his new weight for the first time. The Team Alpha Male product was 125.5 for his fight against Yasuhiro Urushitani, who also was 125.5. Urushitani is widely considered the No. 2 flyweight in the world behind McCall.

To open up the main card on FX, Court McGee, the Season 11 winner of “The Ultimate Fighter,” meets Constantinos Philippou in a middleweight bout. McGee came in at 184.5; Philippou was 185.5.

The event’s most heated face-off came with featherweights Cole Miller and Steven Siler, who needed to be separated by UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, standing in for a late-arriving president Dana White, as they pointed at each other and exchanged words. Miller is looking to exact some revenge for his brother Micah, who was defeated by Siler to get onto the Season 14 cast of “The Ultimate Fighter.”
