UFC 141 Medical Suspensions: Brock Lesnar, Nate Diaz Among Lengthiest Shutdowns

Brock Lesnar

Lesnar, Diaz, Matyushenko, Gamburyan possibly out six months

Twelve fighters from Friday’s UFC 141 pay-per-view in Las Vegas were given medical suspensions following their fights, including potential six-month shelf time for four fighters.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission released the medical suspensions to HeavyMMA.com on Tuesday. Among the most notable, former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar received a six-month suspension after his loss to Alistair Overeem in the card’s main event. Lesnar, who lost by first-round TKO after a liver kick from Overeem crumpled him, will be out until June 28, officially, and must have his abdominal injury cleared by a doctor before returning. But it likely is a moot point since Lesnar announced his retirement immediately after the fight.

Co-main event winner Nate Diaz could be out for as long as six months, as well, unless he has his right eye cleared by an ophthalmologist. Provided that happens, he could be back as soon as February. Vladimir Matyushenko and Manny Gamburyan received similar work stoppages from the NSAC – both could be out as long as six months unless they have their injuries cleared earlier by doctors.

Main event winner Overeem was cut near his right eye by Lesnar early in the fight, and because of that he was hit with a fairly standard 45-day suspension with no contact for a month. Co-main event fighter Donald Cerrone, who lost a unanimous decision to Diaz, received the same 45/30 suspension for a cut on his lower lip.
