Featherweights agree to bout in Stockholm

A featherweight bout between Akira Corassani and Jason Young has been added to the UFC’s debut card in Sweden.

UFC officials recently confirmed the fight, which is likely to be a part of the preliminary card of UFC on Fuel 2 on April 14 in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital and largest city. The event will take place at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm with the main card airing live on Fuel TV.

Corassani (9-3, 1 NC), a member of Season 14 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” reached the semifinals on the show, but lost to eventual featherweight runner-up Dennis Bermudez. Corassani was the only cast member who did not make his official UFC debut on the TUF 14 Finale card – he was forced out of a planned bout with an injury. Instead, he’ll make his UFC debut in his home country of Sweden. Corassani’s last official fight came in February 2011, a TKO loss in Sweden. Before that, he had a seven-fight unbeaten streak.

Young (8-5, 0-2 UFC), from England, is a former Cage Rage lightweight champion, but comes into the fight in crucial territory with a two-fight UFC losing skid. Young lost his UFC debut at UFC 131 with a unanimous decision loss to Dustin Poirier. He followed that up in his home country at UFC 138, but dropped a decision to Michihiro Omigawa.

The UFC’s Sweden debut is expected to air on Fuel TV as the second live UFC card on the cable channel in 2012. The first will take place Feb. 15 in Omaha, Neb. The card will be the UFC’s 10th country outside the United States. And as of now, it could be the fourth straight event outside the United States over a six-week stretch between February and April of this year. The promotion is scheduled to be in Japan on Feb. 26, Australia on March 3, Montreal on March 24 and Stockholm on April 14.

Earlier this week, the UFC announced the main event for show – a light heavyweight bout between Stockholm’s Alexander Gustafsson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Also on the card, middleweight Brian Stann will face Alessio Sakara. So far, there are six Swedish fighters on the card – including three new UFC signees.
