Bellator 18 Recap And Results

Jay Silva’s time in the Ultimate Fighting Championship was short, but his time in the cage at Bellator 18 against Hector Lombard was even shorter.

After Paulo Filho was forced to withdraw from Thursday’s main event last minute, Silva jumped on the opportunity, looking to rebound from a dismal pair of fights in the UFC. However, a mere six seconds were necessary for Lombard to knock out the struggling middleweight, as a flurry to open the fight proved too much for Silva. Silva’s demise came at an official time of 6.2 seconds.

Lombard has become one of the more dominant middleweights outside of the UFC, holding a professional record of 25-2-1. He has yet to be finished in a professional mixed martial arts competition, with his two losses coming to Akihiro Gono and Gegard Mousasi via unanimous decision.

Prior to the main event, Bellator’s featherweights were back in action, competing in the semi-finals of the second season’s tournament. The first 145-pound tournament bout took place between Joe Warren and Georgi Karakhanyan. Warren displayed his dominant wrestling throughout, but was almost constantly in danger of the ferocious ground game of Karakhanyan. However, Warren managed to ward off all the submission attempts en route to a unanimous decision victory.

The second featherweight match of the evening featured Patricio “Pitbull” Freire and Wilson Reis. Though the action was even throughout the early minutes of the fight, “Pitbull” turned up his striking, displaying his distinct advantage on the feet. Reis failed to take the fight into his world for long enough to score a submission, and the judges turned in a unanimous decision for Freire, granting him the opportunity to participate in the featherweight final opposite Warren later this year.
