Brian Stann vs. Mike Massenzio In The Works For UFC On Versus 2

Former United States Marine Brian Stann will make his middleweight debut against Mike Massenzio at “UFC on Versus 2.”

Heavy.com was informed of the matchup on Tuesday evening by sources close to the event.

Though not officially announced, “UFC on Versus 2” is expected to take place on Aug. 1 at the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Stann, a combat veteran who won the Silver Star for valor in combat, will fight at middleweight for the first time in the UFC. He jumped from the WEC – where he spent the majority of his career – in 2008 to face Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 97 last April. Soszynski submitted Stann via kimura in the first round. Stann then reeled off two consecutive victories over Steve Cantwell and Rodney Wallace before losing to elite wrestler Phil Davis at UFC 109 earlier this after. After the bout, Stann said he would be dropping to middleweight.

Massenzio has fought two times in the UFC. He defeated Drew McFedries via submission during his debut at “Fight Night: Diaz vs. Neer” in September 2008, then lost to C.B. Dolloway at “UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008” a mere three months later.

“UFC on Versus 2” will mark the second UFC broadcast on Zuffa television partner Versus. No main event has been announced, but one feature bout will see top light heavyweight prospect Jon Jones taking on Vladimir Matyushenko.
