Showtime Networks and Verizon today announced the launch of a nationwide, high-definition television application. We received a press release about the news here at Heavy.com, but truthfully, it was filled with a bunch of acronyms and geek terms that we couldn't possibly understand. We'll do our best to break it down for you here, but keep in mind that some of this stuff goes over our heads and we could be horribly wrong on some of it.
Here's what it boils down to: Verizon FiOS TV customers will have a new way to interact with their television programming on Showtime. Why is this classified as MMA news? Because Showtime is giving the service a test run during tomorrow night's "Strikeforce: Challengers" show. Viewers will have access to "voting and polling functionality" in addition to extended content like fighter profiles, quotes and records. They'll also be able to participate in trivia games and view a fight calendar that will no doubt be devoid of UFC show dates.
If you're a Verizon FiOS customer, be sure to check out the new experience tomorrow night during the Challengers show and let us know how it goes. Meanwhile, we'll continue using our rabbit ear antenna and cutting-edge 1991 Emerson TV that weighs 431 pounds.
