The Electronic Entertainment Expo - or E3 to fans of abbreviation - is just about to hit Los Angeles. And while the show may not ever rise to the over-the-top extravaganzas of the boom period, it's still a time where big news drops about some of the hottest games of the coming year. In this feature, I'll spotlight ten games that I think are going to be the hottest news coming out of the show and tell you everything you need to know about them.
10. EA Sports MMA
A challenger appears to UFC Unleashed - Electronic Arts, the undisputed masters of the modern sports games, is throwing their hat in the MMA ring. Featuring Strikeforce as its flagship promotion but offering fighters from other leagues all over the world, everything we've seen from this looks amazing, from the pixel-perfect recreations of famous fighters like Fedor Emelianenko to a deep-looking grappling system. Can't wait to get hands-on with this one. Watch the trailer.
9. Metroid: Other M
Nintendo has had luck handing space bounty hunter Samus Aran off to other developers, but giving the reins of the Metroid series over to Team Ninja, the studio behind Ninja Gaiden seems risky. What we've seen certainly seems interesting - taking place both in 2D and 3D gamespace, Samus controls like a sidescrolling platformer normally, but by pointing the Wiimote towards the screen, can shift to first-person view. Watch the trailer.
8. Gears Of War 3
Cliffy B's blockbuster franchise is guaranteed to make a strong showing at E3 this year. The conclusion of the trilogy takes place eight months after the fall of Jacinto, with the protagonists living in an abandoned aircraft carrier and having to deal not only with the Locust but a new enemy called the Lambent, Locust mutated by Imulsion into a new, deadly foe. Luckily not only do you have new weapons and the ability to pilot robot suits (sweet!) but Epic also promises a four-player co-op campaign. Watch the trailer.
7. Marvel Vs. Capcom 3
Fighting fans have just one thing on their minds this E3 - getting their hands on Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. It's been a damn long time since the last installment in Capcom's over-the-top crossover fighting series, and with the unconditional success of Street Fighter 4, there's no doubt in anybody's mind that this one is going to be slammin'. Watch the teaser trailer.
6. Epic Mickey
When we heard that legendary designer Warren Spector's next challenge was rehabilitating Disney's saccharine mascot Mickey Mouse through the medium of an action-adventure game, we were... skeptical is a good word to use there. Was the world really clamoring for an edgy reinvention of Mickey Mouse? But, to our happy surprise, everything we've seen of Epic Mickey looks on point - awesome visual design, cool mechanics and amazing atmosphere.
