What’s New In Games This Week

It’s a new year, and things are often a bit slow in the new games department. But there’s at least one new notable release, from the wild word of indie gaming to look out for. As well as a classic, re-released with all the trimmings. Plus, a recent release that’s been made approximately 1000% more awesome thanks to some DLC.

Here’s a premise for you: as a member of an elite force, it’s your job to fight the forces of dust and disorder with your broom. So yeah, you’re a glorified janitor. But is that such a bad thing? Actually, it’s not, especially when you can run up walls and make all sorts of crazy-ass, acrobatic jumps. Also helping is the beautifully rendered environments and breathtaking animation. If you’re a fan of N+, Strider, or classic 2D gameplay in general, this is your first must have game of 2012. PC

Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition

Since 2010, plenty of competitors to the crown that Gran Turismo lays claim to have come, and they’ve all went. When it comes to reproducing the art of driving, nothing has yet to knock GT5 from its mighty throne. And part of the winning formula has come from constant updates, which naturally has had a price tag attached. Well, for those who have been on the fence, your time is finally here. XL Edition is basically all the additional cars, brand new modes, improved AI, and everything else that brings the core release to “Spec 2.0”, in one handy package. Plus, it’s at a much cheaper price than if you had picked everything as they came along! So patience does have its rewards. PS3

Saints Row The Third: Genki Bowl VII

We rarely feature DLC in our new games rundowns, but this particular slice of extra content is well worth the spotlight plus asking price. Basically, it takes a game that already managed to do a fairly decent job of itself, of stepping away from the shadow of Grand Theft Auto, that being Saints Row The Third, and finally delivers the one part of the wacky world that was talked, yet sadly was not realized in the original release. Some will say that the makers were being perhaps greedy on holding out, but I say it’s dollars and sense. Besides, the ability to run around like sad panda, with a chainsaw, and avoiding a big ball of yarn, that just snuffed a guy dressed like a hot dog, is not a given but a privilege. PC, PS3, Xbox 360
