What’s New In Games: Kid Icarus, Ninja Gaiden 3

Let’s see… a chance to play the bad guy in the Resident Evil universe? A Nintendo sequel 21 years in the making? And a new Ninja Gaiden game that might not be sadistically punishing? Not a bad lineup for you dollar this week.

All right, time to play a game that’s just one big series of “what if’s”? Like, what if you were one of the long running bad guys in the Resident Evil universe? Furthermore, what if it was your job to hunt down and kill Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield? Yes, those are actual game objectives and apparently, you will get the chance (unless Capcom decides to do something wacky, you never know from those folks). With so much to wrap one’s mind around, it’s somewhat easy to forget that the name of the game is third person, squad based shooting, but that’s in there as well. So for those who have wanted a bit more action to the RE formula, yet all the familiar faces to fill bullets with (from RE2 & RE3), here ya go. PS3, Xbox 360

Hey, another game for the 3DS that’s worth nabbing and one that isn’t a port! This time, we’re finally getting the sequel to Kid Icarus that many of us have been asking for the past 26 years. And hopefully you’ve played it recently since it supposedly references both it and the rather obscure sequel for the original Game Boy from back in 1999. Rest assured, new players will still enjoy themselves, yet old school gamers will most enjoy seeing classic characters reborn and in 3D. Add in all the AR cards that come enclosed, along with the stand that comes with each copy (plus Circle Pad Pro compatibility), a multiplayer mode that is supposed to be second to none, and perfect scores for the Japanese version. What you have here is basically have another home run from Nintendo. 3DS

Time to hack, time to slash, time to get bloody, and time to hit continue repeatedly. Or maybe not? The third helping of the adventures of Ryu Hayabusa has him melding with his sword or some nonsense. But who cares about the plot, right? All that really matters is if the stylish methods of killing foes are back, along with the many tall bad guys. Those are all accounted for (or should be). The real question is how it’ll stack up to its predecessors, given how the Team Ninja (the series mainstay) Tomonobu Itagaki is no longer with the studio. The designer was known for his “man’s man” approach to video games, hence the brutally punishing difficulty from before. So there stands a decent chance that this latest edition might be the most approachable yet. Or, it could be just as difficult. For those who require super easy mode, Ryu will just have to wear a pink bow like before or something equally humiliating. PS3, Xbox 360
