This Week In Gaming News

posted November 18, 2011 by

It's a big of a light week, news-wise, though there's no shortage of things to talk about. Like how the new producer for Metal Gear Rising might fare, how not to treat borrowed property and how not accuse Nintendo of promoting the wearing of fur!

VGA Nominees Revealed
VGA Nominees Revealed

Spike TV's annual Video Game Awards are just around the corner, and the nominees were finally unveiled. As expected, most of the choices are hardly shocking, like Skyrim, Arkham City, Skywayrd Sword, Portal 2, or Uncharted 3 as game of the year contenders, while others are balling, such as Need For Speed: The Run getting nominated for best driving game.

Metal Gears Rising Gets A New Producer, Metal Gear Solid 5 Officially On The Way
It was revealed earlier this week, via Twitter, that the black sheep of the Metal Gear games has yet another producer. What was originally the job of series creator, and which then went to a person whose only credit was working on Silent Scope, is now in the lap of a person working on Zone of the Enders HD. It is hoped that his handiwork will be on display at this year's VGAs.

In other news, the existence of fifth installment of the primary series was disclosed via the Official PlayStation Magazine, and creator Hideo Kojima will again be assuming the creative lead. For years he has stated his desire to distance himself from the franchise, hence why he walked away from Rising, though many diehard MGS fans are no doubt relieved to hear that the Boss is back in charge yet again.

Telltales Get In Hot Water For Banging Up Replica Jurassic Park Jeep
To help promote their upcoming Jurassic Park game, the publisher borrowed a man's replica jeep, based upon what was seen in the movie, for PAX Prime. Not only was it damaged via transport, but Telltales feigned any responsibility afterward, forcing the disgruntled owner of the vehicle no other option other than to bitch about it on the internet.

As a result of the negative press, a rep claimed that he was going to send a personal check to solve the matter. Members of Reddit, which is where the owner of the jeep stated his case, have also been accused of harassing the former Telltale employee that brokered the jeep deal.

Saints Row the Third
Saints Row The Third For PS3 Fails To Deliver Exclusive Content
Trailer Full Review

When first announced, an exclusive weapon was promised for all Sony devotees, but in the end, no such thing materialized. Turns out, the game's creators and publishers could never come to terms and the deadline to make a choice simply breezed by. A few days later, a digital copy of the second game was given out via PSN instead. Most have theorized that it was a last minute decision to avoid any further embarrassment, and that many are happy about (provided that they don't own it already).

Saints Row The Third Subjected To Censorship In Japan
Given the high number of sexually tinged games to come from the land of the rising sun, many were taken aback by the news that the 3rd Saints Row game had to be retooled for Japanese audiences. The Penetrator is a three foot long dildo that is also a bat. To adhere to Japanese's laws, which prohibits the depiction of genitalia not only were the head and veins removed, but the physics were also altered, as not to be too floppy.

PETA / Mario
PETA Accuses Nintendo Of Advocating Fur
Watch Now

The controversial and extremist animal rights group, PETA, released yet another Flash game that targets a popular franchise for encouraging the persecution of furry little creatures in their eyes. In this instance, the target was Nintendo, who had just released Super Mario 3D Land. The belief is that him donning the Tanooki suit is a way of telling all the kids out there that wearing fur is a-okay.

Not surprisingly, the backlash was sudden and fierce, primarily those astute enough to point the cultural insensitivity of their accusations. Which in turn has forced the organization to backpedal, but in a half-assed manner. Now they claim that they were just poking fun at Nintendo in order to call attention to a serious, and completely unrelated matter.
